BREAKING NEWS: Philippines Ban Guns, Checkpoints, Door-to-Door Gun Grabbing, Arrests

Check this out. They just banned guns in the Philippines.

They set up check-points and went door-to-door grabbing guns and arresting people.

UN operation? Trial run for the USA? :fan:

The ban aims to curb political killings similar to the massacre of 57 people late last year [Reuters]

Police in the Philippines say they have arrested at least 70 people since Sunday's imposition of a nationwide ban on guns ahead of elections later this year.

Some 3,500 checkpoints have been set up across the country to enforce the ban which officials hope will cut the number of politically-motivated killings which usually blight election campaigns.

The five-month ban started on Sunday and applies to everyone including off duty police and military officers.

"We want to show to the public that we are dead serious about implementing the nationwide gun ban," Jefferson Soriano, the Philippines police deputy director general, said on the ABS-CBN television network.

Officials estimate there are more than one million unlicensed firearms in circulation in the Philippines, with dozens of people killed each election season when politicians seek to eliminate rivals or critics.

Fuelling the violence are the "private armies" controlled by so-called political warlords.

The gun ban is imposed ahead of every Philippine election, but has taken on more significance in recent months following the massacre of 57 people in the southern province of Maguindanao late last year.

Under the terms of the ban, which will last until June 9, civilians with permits to carry guns are also forbidden from taking them out of their homes.

In addition, politicians are not allowed to have armed bodyguards, a common practice normally.

Here are a couple other websites discussing this issue. I avoid Al Jazeera myself...maybe it's just the "little things" like broadcasting hostages being beheaded.:censored:

See:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/11/wo...ilippines.html

http://politics.inquirer.net/view.ph...0100112-246889

According to the NY Times article, the firearms ban relates to CARRYING weapons outside the home, and will be in effect through 6/9/10.

The Inquirer article mentions that judges are exempt from the ban, and lawyers are trying to get the same exemption. I guess some animals are more equal than others. No big surprise.

So no one fought back and went out fighting? They all just gave in? Wonder how if it will play out like that here.

The same, for 90% of all gun owners, I bet.

Ban guns and take away the bodyguards from the politicians? Riiiight.
Let's see what the elections bring. Bans may not matter.

MetalManiac, your title is a bit misleading, don't you think? I didn't see in any of the related articles any mention of "door to door gun grabbing". This is not a general gun ban, it is a restriction of the right to carry until after the elections have been held. Bx3

Thanks for the clarification, I was wondering why I didn't hear about bloodshed over this.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Philippines Ban Guns, Checkpoints, Door-to-Door Gun Grabbing, Arre

There's a little more going on here than the article sugguests -

In the (muslim) south, there's one clan which has had a lock on the electoral process. This control is finally weakening - there is pretty clear evidence that the clan leaders whacked the (favored) opposition candidate to prevent loosing control.

My hunch is you can still go to PI and have the door to Jolibee's (a fast food chain) opened by a security guard with a MAC-10.

I hope that this is PI leaders finally clamping down on the muslim kleptocrats - (note, PI leaders are also completely corrupt).

For the conspiracy folks -
This being said, this is a good trial run for the Democrats after they get caught stealing the Nov 2010 elections -you know, like when more votes were counted from King County, Washington, than there were registered voters during the last election. (Many of which were "found" during the recount process.)

I wouldn't bother wasting money on a firearm or PMs. There has been a huge rash of boating accidents this past year in which many GIM members have lost everything. You are better off just leaving your money in the markets or your bank. Bx3

"respect" for "authority" even if it is derived from a corrupt source, does seem to be more ingrained in the asians cultures. I wonder why that is?

Aren't they beautiful - guaging from this picture filipinos only own garands, carbines and M-14's. This seems like they are either collecting or issuing weapons to a militia

I've worked in several jobs where there is a high Philpeen Pop and I can tell you in no uncertain terms.

Management goes out of there way to hire them because they get "carte blanche" that makes walmart employees seem like Wall street tycoons

Hospitals have set up lucrative "RN farms' in the PI because they know they dont have to pay them jacksheet and they turn them over fast enough where they dont have to hire American nurses ( St Barnabas is nortrious for this practice and can be confirmed through a nurse manager that I know who is (guess what?)

"there are more than one million unlicensed firearms in circulation in the Philippines, with dozens of people killed each election season"

Millions vs. dozens. Doesn't sound like a big problem to me.

Does anyone think they'll get their guns back? In all of history, has there ever been a temporary gun ban, then they got them back? ...you can't count Katrina.

Alarmist nonsense, this temporary gun "ban" is standard procedure in the Philippines during elections, as the article clearly states. Did the OP read, but not understand, the article they copied?

Somehow I get the feeling the rightful owners of those guns are NOT going to get them back.

Sounds like they should get right to the source of the violence and ban politicians instead.

I can just about guarantee you that those weapons are not from this story. They look like many of the pictures taken after past military actions against the communist and now muslim fighters who have long been at war with the Philippine govt. They are surplus US weapons that were originally given (some time ago) to the Philippine military and were probably taken off of the battlefield or stolen/sold into the black market. Bx3
